Singapore Introductory Mooting Program 2022

BR Law is pleased to have been the main sponsor of the Singapore Introductory Mooting Program 2022. The Program was designed to provide young students in Year 1 of University, Pre-University and Upper-Secondary School, with a safe and accessible platform to develop their skills in Legal Reasoning and Advocacy.

Over 150 participants benefitted from a comprehensive curriculum of workshops in Advocacy,  Legal Research & Writing, and the Law on Defamation, culminating in a 4-day moot court competition.

Upon completing the workshops, the participants had the opportunity to put their newly acquired skills into practice by preparing written submissions for a moot problem which dealt with modern issues in the law of defamation. The participants then exchanged written submissions before presenting oral submissions in the preliminary, semifinal and final rounds of the Moot.

BR Law’s Ms Phang Shi Ting conducted a Q&A session where participants had the opportunity to ask questions about various aspects of the legal profession, including the differences between litigation and corporate law, the representation of women in the legal industry, and whether students in the science or arts stream have any advantage in reading law.

The final round of the Moot, which was held on 23rd December 2022, saw a team of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (IB) go head-to-head with a team from Year 1 NUS Law students. After an hour of intense oral submissions, spectated by the participants and their families and friends, the latter team emerged victorious.

BR Law extends its congratulations to all teams and participants for their outstanding performances and efforts throughout the Program. We are inspired by the confidence and initiative displayed by the participants, most of whom would have had their first foray into mooting and the legal world through this Program.

As a firm with over 30 years of experience in dispute resolution, BR Law believes in nurturing advocacy skills and experience in our junior counsels from the outset. The Program’s objective of imparting legal aspirants with an interest in advocacy and a greater appreciation for its purpose and functions in dispute resolution aligns with our firm’s values. We also extend our gratitude to the Committee for organizing this valuable Program and look forward to future iterations.
